One thing I don't understand is, Why does Godzilla ''hunt'', and kill the Mutos ?...

Maybe I'm just missing something but it makes no sense. At first I thought that the monsters competed for food - Radioactive materials. So I thought that Godzilla would hunt and kill the mutos, and then absorb their radiation, However after he killed them and after a little nap, He just left to the sea.

You should change this thread title because of spoilers but back on topic.....maybe they are just a threat to his existence and maybe they are competing for radiation.

How far can we push nature before it pushes back?

I haven't seen it yet but I already knew they die and it was pretty obvious that Godzilla would kill them and win but a spoiler alert would be nice. What about the people who haven't seen it yet and have no idea that the MUTOs die? I am so sick of selfish people putting spoilers in the actual title. You never ever do that. Don't people think about others anymore these days??

Yeah I know you did but he probably won't change it. Hopefully not too many people who haven't seen the film yet look at this topic because it is not fair to have the movie ruined for others.

JOHNSMITH - Your question is most compelling. Let's take a look at the film in order to find our answer. When Serizawa and his assistant enter the mines within the Philipines and discover the ancient skeleton and the pair of eggs, it is brought to light that they are parasitic in nature - meaning they obviously were deleterious to the creature within whose body they had been placed. We can assume that the massive creature was similar to Godzilla, ergo its body was heavily radioactive - something the MUTOs need to survive. As such, it may be that Godzilla hunts and kills the MUTOs due to the extreme threat they pose to his species. I certainly hope this helps to clarify the conflict between Godzilla and the MUTOs for you. :)

Ok, For those that complained about my original title, How else would I ask my question ?...Seriously, If you haven't seen the movie yet, Get off the forum until you see it.

Thanks for the replies though. So I gather that I did not miss anything and that Godzilla's motives are not actually explained in the movie. We can only presume.

Less likely scenario. In the movie Dr Serizawa states that, in a metaphorical way that godzilla is natures way to create balence. But maybe that is the role of the godzilla species. Maybe its instinct to keep the world in balence- a natural born hero. His species evolved with one purpose, keep the balence. I'm not wording it very well but if you get what I mean, it's a small possibility that I could be right (or very wrong).

That's a better title. By the way, there are lots of other ways you could have worded the title for example; "Question about Godzilla and Mutos" or something like that. Anyway, as long as you put a spoiler warning and changed the title, that's fine. Thanks for doing so. Not that it was a problem for me because I already knew, but for other people who haven't seen the movie. Of course there are going to be people on the forums who still haven't watched it. Just because some people haven't seen it why does that mean they should get off the forums until they see it? The forums aren't for straight out spoilers. Anyway I am watching it tomorrow. Thanks again for changing the title and maybe I will answer this question tomorrow when I watch it. Cheers :)

EDIT: and sorry if I sounded like a bit of a dick in my earlier post. I know you were just being enthuastic about the film. I just felt sorry for other people who might have accidently seen the topic and had it spoiled for themselves. I didn't mean to be an asshole in anyway.

DEADITE KAIJU,...I just figured that all of us fans would have already seen the movie the opening night. I didn't even think that the muto dying would be a huge spoiler, I mean that was the most likely scenario and I was expecting it even before I've watched the movie.

Yeah it's all good man. Everyone is different. Some people (such as myself) would see that as a big spoiler but others don't take it as a big spoiler. And yes it was the most likely scenerio. It's alright, you weren't intentionally trying to spoil it for anyone. Sorry again if I came across as a dick. I just wanted to save other people from not being spoilt that's all.

Watched the movie and loved it!!  As I was watching, I couldn't help the feeling that this movie was made as the true homage to 1954 and other top-notch "Godvilla vs ..." films.

Most of the times, when Godzilla comes to fight another Kaiju, there is really no explaination for him being there.  The best explaination is to "restore that balance," as stated by Serizawa.  There is always the General who says kill him and the scientist that says they have to fight.  Exactly what I wanted from this movie.

Think about it...but don't over think it...

i think its because the mutos were incedibly agressive kind of how snakehead fish. they kill every fish in there ecosystem and then move on when theres no food is available. godzilla sensing there return decided for the good of himself to attack the mutos and destroyed them so they cant ravage his habitat anymore

actually in the movie he wasn't hunting the muto's, he knew they were back, and he had to stop them from breeding and taking over the earth. :)

I remember dr.serizawa saying godzilla heard the muto's talking to each other and that he was going to restore the balance. :)

Godzilla is an apex predator so it could be because of territory. Alums razor.

Or he thought he would look really badass if he just popped up and ripped their ugly mugs off!  But you know, there could be a more scientific approach too....!! :)

Ok my answer is HEAVILY spoiler filled so be warned if you haven't seen it.

Thay being said there are several parts to this answer. The first is that this species has, according to the interviews I've seen, been around as long as Godzilla. The MUTO can multiply very quickly and cause a lot of damage to the earth and the Godzilla's evolved as natures way to keep the MUTOs in check.  That's part of it, it's his instinct.

Now, if you look at the part with the skeleton, that was not a Muto skeleton- the spinal column was all wrong for that creature- it was the skeleton of an ancient Godzilla. Where was the Muto's eggs laid? In that old Godzilla. This entails that once the earth became less radioactive and the creatures, Godzilla and Mutos alike, were driven underground, the Mutos had to find different sources of radiation to feed their young. My guess is that the Mutos started fighting and killing their alpha predators, Godzilla, and using the carcasses of the Godzilla's as a location to hatch eggs, at least male ones, which would explain why the egg sacs were there. This would further explain why Godzilla was so intent on fighting and killing the Mutos- self preservation. Should the next have hatched in SF in the movie, Godzillla would have been vastly outnumbered by a species that just two of almost killed him.

Anyways that's my theory

You mean from earth?....oh by the way LINKMAN89 that skeleton is neither godzilla or a muto, it is something called shinomura I think, they are a type of muto but they were the first to emerge after the Hiroshima bombing and are different to the ones in the film!

Evolving to protect nature is in a way what an Apex predator does, it thins out the herds to keep over population down. Godzilla hunts because thats what an apex predator does.
