SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED?

Let me start by saying I hope with God almighty as my witness I'm wrong about this. I am getting fairly concerned about the lack of credible film reviews for Godzilla. Is the studio trying to keep a lid on negative opinions of the film? Is it destined to disappoint? What's with the shroud of mystery about the film? Why are they being so secretive about this movie? It's been my experience that when a studio holds a strict embargo on a film's reviews it usually means the film is not quite up to snuff and they know. Therefore they try to hold off on any mention of the films failings to the last possible moment. Once again I hope this is not the case but I can't help but feel a little uneasy about this. What gives people?

Nearly every film is under embargo now. The Hobbit Desolation of Smaug and Captain America Winter Soldier recieved overwhelmingly postiive reviews, yet there was still an embargo. We'll find out in a few days if we should be concerned or not when the embargo ends.

take a moment to gather your breath. the secrecy is a clever marketing technique to provide suspense and make people want to see how it goes. I wouldn't worry to much about it failing, it looks promising.

I had read that the embargo ends on the 11th (Sunday), so we should start seeing a flood of reviews after that. I think i saw only one review for Spider-Man before last week. I'm not worried about it, and neither should you be.

I think that reality is finally hitting us fans. Our expectations were way to high and now there is no way back. Prepare to be left disappointed, unfortunately. Only hope the fight scene is good atleast.

Well to be fair, OTHER reviews from pre-screeners did not note anything about Aaron Taylor's acting, others thought Ken was cheesy. Others thought there WAS enough Godzilla action and pacing was good. Right now it's mixed really, hard to tell.

@JohnSmith, I doubt disappointment will strike me.

I can only speak for myself as a 43 yr. old grown man and lifelong Godzilla fan I only want the movie to be good. I don't want to be burned again with a lackluster Americanized Godzilla movie. I know that our country has brilliant craftsmen of film and if taken seriously and respectfully we could make a very good Godzilla film that would step of the genre a bit. Ever since I was a young boy I wanted to see this happen. I thought it would happen in 1998 and we all know how that went. Now here we are 2014 and a young filmmaker with considerable talents and heart comes along and attempts to give us what we want an adult take on our favorite monster. Now cryptic reviews are beginning to surface and most of what we are hearing is that it's too slow, not enough of Godzilla in the film, poor, acting by the lead character yadda, yadda, yadda. It's not like I expected this movie to be the second coming or anything foolish like that I just want it to be good. So maybe we can get a franchise started by a cutting edge U.S. studio and one day see what they could do with access to most of TOHO Studios beloved characters. Maybe I want too much but I gotta be honest it's important to me and to all of you that this movie is not another flop.

I hope that there's a sequel and that it would turn out to be a batman begins - The dark knight sort of thing, Where I did not particularly like batman begins that much, But The dark knight was just awesome.

So far, reviews are mixed but leaning towards a more positive note towards Godzilla.

I'm wondering how many repeat topics we'll go through titled "I'm concerned" or "I'm worried" before reviews start pouring in.

It's called a Review Embargo, guys. Rumored not to lift until next Monday. Chill.

For what it's worth, I spoke with a friend via text after he saw a press screening last night in NYC...I asked for no spoilers and he wasn't about to give any anyways...his quick review was as follows: "AWESOME...a must see film!" He did warn about not watching all the content being posted online lately, as it contains things that would be better left to learn while watching the film for the first time. Anyhow, there you have it. Now back to monitoring my blood pressure until next Thirsday night's 9:00 PM IMAX 3D showing here in DC. Stay calm and stay the course, my fellow G-Fans!

What the fuck are you people talking about!? The guy who claimed that ATJ's acting was bad STILL thought the movie was good. You can't expect every review to be all rosy like "the film had zero flaws!" Having people cite the negative parts while still calling the movie good is actually a good sign; it proves that the pre-screeners didn't go in and say that the film was "easily the best film ever just because it has Godzilla". And WTF is all this talk about "mixed reviews"??? ALL of the reviews I have read said that the movie was really good, despite the fact that it has its flaws (come on, EVERY movie has flaws... So stop crying about it)

ZAFFZILLA, After reading these early pre-screen reviews, Though be it done by non-professionals, There is bound to be some negativity because what the reviews suggest isn't something any fan would want to hear. Being and staying positive won't make those problems pointed out by these reviews just disappear.

Well in my opinion no matter how bad this movie is, it is Impossible for it to be worse than the 98' movie

Ok, some of you may already know that I worked in marketing for a major movie studio for 20 years.  And I got pretty high up.  So I sort of know what I'm talking about.

Usually the studios don't mind early reviews for a good movie.  Contrary to what has been written here, Spider Man 2, and Captain America 2 were reviewed weeks before they premiered because the studio believed they had good movies.  Avatar, Titanic, The Avengers and The Dark Knight had reviews out long before the movie.  Avatar and Titanic had 60 Minutes do segments on the movies a month before they opened.  If Legendary is holding professional reviews until next week, then they must have a reason.  Because with X-Men coming out the following week they need as much word of mouth as they can get. They need to make their money quickly while they have a large percentage of the market to themselves.

I could explain to you how the studios look at reviews, but that would take some time.  But I will say early reviews tend to be much more positive than later reviews, which is why a lot of movies that get rave reviews, in the beginning, often turn out to be dudes once you get around to seeing them.

People are really starting to get uptight here. All pre screening reviews have been positive, even the ones with negatives. I think you guys are looking for reasons to be negative. The movie's almost a week away, be EXCITED!

he assumption of the matter is that the reviewer seems to be the type of person who doesn't like long story filled movies and prefers the modern shortness trend. I on the other hand, like a lot of other people, recall the glory days when movies were filled with enough content that you didn't leave feeling like the movie was too short, which seems to happen with a lot of modern movies I watch these days. I'm not even sure if we can take his word for Aaron's acting. I also find it obsured that people think to be a good actor you have to have a specific emotional personality, when in real life situations there are people who react to terrible events in a calm manner while freaking out inside, which seems to be Aarons character. His character also seems to be more of the rational type, meaning you're not going to see his emotions taking control of him as much as other characters who are driven by feeling. There's a good reason for this: you can't have the hero freaking out and getting so emotional he can't complete his quest. He needs to remain level headed.

Maybe I wasn't clear about what I meant with this post that seems to be sparking heated debates. For what reason I don't know. Everyone's entitled to their opinion so there's really no reason to disrespect someone whose opinion is different then your own. If some of us are concerned we have our reasons no one is wrong or right. The problem I have is that after a pretty intense marketing blitz, and several trailers and tv spots. We are a mere 9 days away from release and we have not heard an official review of the film from any reputable source. Just a quote saying TOHO(WHO HAS A STAKE IN THE MOVIE'S SUCCESS) saying they loved it. Plus a handful of fanboys who probably would like it no matter what. I just find it a bit odd to not let word of mouth from influential entertainment news outlets create a buzz. It's a part of the business of promoting a film to do so. Ask yourself a question if you made a kick ass movie that you hoped to reap a small fortune with and you were confident that it would be well received wouldn't you want the few people who have seen it to express their thoughts to the public especially if you knew the movie impressed them? I would I'd be all over that. I saw Spider-Man last Thursday night and I knew the general opinion of the movie as far back as April 8th. Official reviews started pouring in that early the movie was released May 2nd. Now I bought my tickets for Godzilla last month and without a dobt I'll be there and most likely enjoy it. But the secrecy is beyond annoying at this point. The film is being marketed as an action adventure but word is we don't really get what's promised or hinted at. I believe it is always best to be honest with your promotion that way no one feels like they've been had.

@Reggie1138:

You hit it on the head.  Studios love positive word of mouth.  And considering that most early reviews are usually a little better than later reviews, you'd think that the studios would want to get a good buzz asap!  However, if the studios is nervous about their product, they will embargo reviews for as long as they can.

Godzilla 2014 has a big problem (as I have mentioned before):  Monster vs. monster movies do not show well.  The superfans love them, but the general public (and most critics do not).  Hopefully Gaerth Edwards (who is still a neophyte) has found a way to incorporate the fights without it looking too campy or silly. To me the absolute best plot would have been Godzilla vs man and military, without the MUTOs.

Now having said that.  Godzilla may still be the movie that we have all been waiting.  Let hope that it is.
