Reviews? Not going to read them

For this movie, which I have been anticipating so long, and following with great dedication and eagerness, I think I won't be reading any of the reviews. As a real Godzilla fan, I consider myself, rightly and without improper arrogance, to be higher authority on this than any random movie journalist. Here's my image of what a movie journalist does:

He sits down in the imax theatre, where he goes so often that he doesn't even notice the 3D or amazing sound effects anymore. He's done some shallow research on the movie beforehand, knows much less about it than I do, has no pre-existing notion of what Godzilla really is or should be. (I'm not saying that he should have such a notion, just implying that I DO have such a notion, and therefore I have more sensible things to say and think about Godzilla.) From the very beginning he watches the movie with a cynical view, tries to draw paralells to other movies to compare it to, probably to the 1998 version too, looks for elements that make it good according to him, often elements that no Godzilla or monster movie should even have. In the end what he feels about the movie doesn't matter, all he cares about is getting the story out and making it interesting. If he has no strong opion on the movie, he might fabricate a negative one because that's easier to write (I know this from experience, and have done this myself when writing a book review at my university. My review got graded very well, even though it was one big lie.) Now what I just gave you was the POSITIVE image, in reality, a lot of movie journalist never even see the film to begin with and copy the others, accumulating all the bad and good press and deciding on a middle road. Either that or, if there's a break in the movie, they leave halfway.

This isn't just a rant (And not a typhoon or an earthquake either). I know people who are in journalism and they acknowledge this, they don't think it's a big deal and they think people who read reviews know this. At the very most I myself would settle for a metacritic, rotten tomatoes kind of general overall score, but I'm sure if I read a review on this movie, I will regret it even if it's fairly positive. There's no reason to have high regard for any of these journalists beside the way in which they compose the article, as in, techincal writing skills or abillity to engage you.

From what you said, I respect you opinion and want this movie to be a critical success. I was too outraged when a movie I was anticipating on 2012 (Inception btw). It got critical acclaim, but got 1 out of 5 stars rating give by some journalist on my country.

But as badass as this movie can be, it won't be perfect. Unlike me, you and most of the people on these forums grew up with Godzilla, and it is perfectly understandable that you want this movie to succeed (I do as well), but not all people, being bad or good reviewers have that special connection to Godzilla as you do, and that kind of cynical critique is essencial since it shows their point of view, as someone who is indiferent and may even dislike the concept, going against the "hype-media" nowadays (e.g. IGN), that make bad journalism, ranting the media they promoted themselves (with those behind the scenes exclusives and "Why you should be hyped for..." articles).

So, be ready to have haters ranting the movie (I would bet my ass that many will compare it to Pacific Rim (which I profundely dislike)), but respect their opinion as much as the one of someone who loved it, as they indirectly help the movie industry to remain as fair as possible.

(PS: Although that does not mean I don't get abit annoyed everytime I remember that Gravity won almost all the oscars except Best film, loosing it to 12 years a slave because 12 years a slave is an historic movie and Gravity was just the year's popular choice to keep people interested on the oscars. Shame on you academy.)

I'm hoping that the movie is so good it's able to capture even the most cynical critic's imagination. it really shouldn't matter whether or not a critic knows or cares about Godzilla going into this movie. It's a reboot and should stand on it's own two feet as a piece of great cinema without having to live in the shadow of its predecessors. I empathise with Gareth - until recently he was an indie director and now he has such a weight of expectation on his shoulders. It's like playing a gig in a pub and then selling out Madison Square Garden in one leap, it's crazy! He seems really intelligent and grounded about the whole experience though so maybe this marriage of indie director and mega-budget movie will create something truly unique and amazing. I'm with Gareth.
