Why we should get excited for the special effects of Godzilla?

We all looking forward to see the King of Monsters on the big screen so, I made a little research about the visual effects of the movie and I discovered some interesting things.

                                 

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that visual effects supervisor and director of photography Peter W. Anderson will receive the Gordon E. Sawyer Award (an Oscar statuette) "for technological contributions that have brought credit to the industry" at the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at the Beverly Hills Hotel in, where else, Beverly Hills. Portions of the presentation will be included in the Oscar 2014 telecast to be hosted by Ellen DeGeneres.

Peter Anderson is also credited for the "project development" of Gareth Edwards’ upcoming Godzilla (2014), starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Juliette Binoche, Bryan Cranston, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, Victor Rasuk, Ken Watanabe, and Elizabeth Olsen.

How Godzilla Could Forever Change the VFX Industry

2014 could truly be a huge year for visual effects artists. Why? One man: Gareth Edwards. You may not recognize his name, but odds are good that you’ve seen a preview of his latest project [Godzilla 2014].

Normally, this wouldn’t be particularly interesting visual effects news (except, of course, for all of the impressive VFX that’s sure to be in the movie). What sets this announcement apart is Edwards’ history: he started off as a visual effects artist before gradually moving into the other facets of filmmaking, such as writing and eventually directing. 

Obviously, Gareth Edwards isn’t the first and only artist to direct a movie. Patrick Tatopoulos, a makeup and special effects artist, shared the director’s chair on the Underworld movies.

The success of Godzilla will go a long way towards paving the way for young visual effects artists, but you can’t just hop out of art school and expect to start directing movies. Edwards worked hard to get where he was. He began his career working on visual effects for the BBC series Heroes and Villains. From there, he entered the 2008 Sci-Fi-London competition in which contestants had to create a complete short film in under 48 hours. His entry, which you can view below, won first place. 

                      

Edwards’ big breakthrough was the success of Monsters, which Edwards wrote and directed. He personally created all of the movie’s special effects, and the entire crew consisted of just 6 people (not surprising considering his success with the Sci-Fi-London competition). The success of Monsters gave Edwards the clout he needed to land the Godzilla directing gig.
