I love the classic Toho monsters as much as any Godzilla fan, but they have their place: In their respective Toho movies.
This is a new franchise developed by Legendary Pictures. Toho has no part in the production save for owning the monster Godzilla. Toho as a company has not engaged in any kind of creative or executive decisions on the project nor are they involved with production. Yoshimitsu Banno and his team are on the project, but they are not from Toho. If anyone believes that Toho is helping create the project, they are wrong. Toho was only ever involved as far as to ensure that Godzilla looked like Godzilla and that he didn't turn out to be another iguana.
Again, respectfully to the Toho lineup, they don't belong in the American franchise as far as I'm concerned. Godzilla is more than enough, and I don't want to see any HD Computer Generated remakes of the old Toho classics. They are classics for a reason, because they hold up just fine exactly the way they are. Part of the charm of the old Godzilla films was the suitmation. This is a new era for Godzilla and it's an entirely new universe that Legendary has created around the creature. None of the old Toho monsters hold a place in it. This is Legendary's project, not Toho's.
If Toho wants to follow in Legendary's footsteps and make a CG Godzilla film featuring new and upgraded versions of their classics, then that's fine and I'd definitely support it.
But all this talk of "which Toho monsters should be in the film," or "which Toho monsters do you think should be in the film," or "what if this Toho monster is teased for a sequel," really needs to stop.
I'll say it again because too many people seem to have misinterpreted Toho's role here. This is not a Toho production and they are not a part of the production team for this film at all. This is Legenday's film, and they have not acquired the rights to any other Toho monsters. Unless they do, there will be no further Toho monsters in this film and that's exactly the way I think it should be and the way it should stay.
Am I really alone in thinking that Toho monsters don't belong in this franchise?
Let me know, because I'm as hardcore a Godzilla (and Toho monster lineup) fan as you can get, but I respect the fact that this is Legendary's production and their take on the creature of Godzilla. To me, Toho monsters outside of Godzilla himself have absolutely zero place in this new universe. If you disagree, then that's fine, but if you're going to disagree at least make your argument intelligent and don't just say "this monster should be in it because it's a fan favorite!" or "it should be in the movie because it's iconic like Godzilla," or some fanboy nonsense like that.
Thank you!
