How Edwards could pull off the Monster Island theme and still have a "horror" film.

Now, I have an idea that seems to actually work.
It's been about 10 years after the events of Godzilla 2014, and the giant monster still presents a threat to mankind. Federally funded scientists are attempting to control the offspring of one of the kaiju from the 2014 movie. To keep any failed experiments from wreaking havoc on civilization once again, their base of operations is located on a remote island, which is known by the people that work there as "Monster Island". They also have a way to contain the kaiju on the island using chemicals that practically chain them to the island. They hope to use these new kaiju as a weapon against Godzilla, so they also experiment on ways to make them more powerful and stronger in hopes to one day rid the world of Godzilla. One day, they produce a powerful specimen, that can seemingly be controlled using chemicals and other things. However, it proves itself a threat when it breaks free of the controls and destroys a city during a fight with Godzilla, but not before injuring Godzilla to an extent, making the human characters a bit hopeful that if they can perfect their formulas to control their kaiju creations.
This is not the whole plot that'd be used, it'd be a very small percentage. Maybe like 10 percent.
But that's not the point.
The real point is that I think I've come up with a way to utilize the Monster Island concept and still get a serious movie.
