I have a few opinions:
1. No psychic phenomena or supernatural stuff.
There's a a lot of this in the older Godzilla films. The psychic powers of the Shobijin (Mothra Fairy Twins), the Venusian ESP memories in Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster, Miki Saegusa's ESP abilities throughout the Heisei series, the talk of the ghosts of the war dead in GMK, etc. But the 2014 Godzilla should be straight-up science fiction. Let's take a break from the paranormal business for a while.
2. No aliens or extraterrestrial influences.
The original plan for the earlier drafts of the Tristar Godzilla film involving the Gryphon monster had Godzilla and the Gryphon being created by ancient aliens, sort of similar to the ancient civilizations that created Gamera in the 1990s movies. While this is an easy way to explain away Godzilla's unearthly powers, it isn't necessary in the new movie. Unless King Ghidorah is making an appearance, which I really don't see happening, forget about aliens for now.
3. No overly outlandish futuristic weaponry.
This is another big part of Godzilla tradition. While the Maser Cannons are OK, as they are more believable now than in the 1960s, there's a lot of overly advanced stuff that won't work as well in a more realistic modern film. Things like the amazingly tough Super X III (G vs Destroyah), the black hole generator (G vs Megagiras), and of course MechaGodzilla don't belong in a Godzilla origin film set in modern times. Leave the super-futuristic tech to Pacific Rim.
Any other thoughts on what older Godzilla concepts don't belong in the new film?
